Japan's imperial couple pay a visit to UNU

United Nations University was honoured with an official visit by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan on June 28. The Imperial couple were greeted at UNU Centre in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward by UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel and Vice Rector Itaru Yasui.

During their two-hour visit, the emperor and empress briefly attended a UNU International Course lecture, and later met with students and UNU postdoctoral fellows at an informal reception.

The royal couple also received a briefing on the work of UNU by Rector van Ginkel, and met the heads of other UN agency offices in Japan. They had attended the opening reception of the establishment of UNU in 1975, and the Empress had attended the reception of a memorial lecture in 1998. This was the Imperial Couple's first visit as the Emperor and Empress.
