Hans van Ginkel honoured with Japan's highest award

Prof. Hans van Ginkel and his wife, BepTeepen, 
after he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun.

Former UNU Rector Prof. Hans van Ginkel has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Grand Cordon, the Japanese government's highest award for non-Japanese nationals.

He received the award from the Emperor of Japan during a ceremony held at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

The award recognises Prof. van Ginkel's contributions to culture and education. He retired in August after serving the university for a decade.

UNU Rector Prof. Dr. Konrad Osterwalder said: "On behalf of all the staff of United Nations University, I wish to express our sincere congratulations to Prof. van Ginkel for this honour. We are pleased that his significant accomplishments during his 10 years as Rector are being recognized by the Government of Japan."

This is the second time UNU has been honoured with the Order of the Rising Sun. Dr. Michio Nagai, who was instrumental in the formation of the university, received the award In 1993.
