Researchers focus on Indonesian forest certification scheme Forest certification is the focus of a new UNU Environment and Sustainable Development Programme (UNU-ESD) sustainable forest management project being undertaken in Indonesia. UNU experts are examining the forest certification system operated by the Indonesian Ecolabelling Institute (LEI) to find out what the scheme has brought to a rural village and to assess the positive and negative impacts that LEI certification has had on the area’s sustainable forest management. This research focuses on rural villages of Central Java that acquired forest certification from LEI in 2004. Since it was the first case of community-based forest management in which forest certification status was acquired by a village, lessons based on their experience can be shared with other communities to promote further sustainable forest management. This collaborative project with LEI is expected to provide an indicative model for other rural communities. Dr. Shimako Takahashi, senior programme associate with UNU-ESD presented a report entitled “A Case Study of a Village in Central Java, Indonesia, in pursuit of Sustainable Forest Management” at Rainforests Restoration for Livelihood, the annual conference of the Japanese Forest Society, in Fukuoka, Japan, April 2-4. |
