New project probes water risks of extreme weather

Scientists of the UNU & GIST Joint Programme on Science and Technology for Sustainability will lead a new research project on the risks to surface water quality posed by increasing extreme weather events caused by climate change.

The Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) is funding the two-year regional collaborative research entitled “Climate change impacts on surface water quality in eastern monsoon Asia: Towards sound management of climate risks”. The primary objective is to set up a regional collaborative research network focusing on the climate risks to surface water quality in response to increasing extreme events.

Eight countries – Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam – will participate in this project. Expected outcomes are a collaborative network system in eastern monsoon Asia and further development of the regional extended network for long-term environmental monitoring.
