Secretary-General's role discussed at New York event

The UNU Office at the UN in New York (UNU-ONY) organized a panel discussion entitled UN Leadership and Multilateralism in Times of US Primacy.

Attended by an audience of over 150, the event saw the launch of two new publications: Secretary or General? The UN Secretary-General in World Politics, edited by Simon Chesterman and published by Cambridge University Press, and Beyond the National Interest: Peacekeeping and Multilateralism in Times of US Primacy, a forthcoming book by Jean-Marc Coicaud, to be published by the United States Institute of Peace Press.

The purpose of the book launch was to address the role of the UN Secretary-General, the overall political and institutional context in which he or she works and the process by which the world's highest-ranking diplomat is selected.

The panel was composed of Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, Shahi Tharoor; Director of the United Nations University Office at the UN in New York, Jean-Marc Coicaud; Director of the New York University School of Law Singapore Programme, Simon Chesterman; and Executive Director of the Security Council Report, Colin Keating. The event was moderated by Linda Fasulo, UN correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC.
