UNU-FTP team visits Sri Lanka to assess training needs

A team of three specialists from the the Iceland-based UNU Fisheries Training Programme (UNU-FTP) and the University of Akureyri travelled to Sri Lanka recently to work with the Icelandic International Development Agency in assessing the need for a course on the procedure of organizing projects and project management at Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries.

“We got the idea after we held a course on management and safety issues at harbours in Sri Lanka last autumn that was considered very successful,” said Árni Helgason, the manager of the local Development Agency.

The Sri Lanka Marine Research Institute (NARA) cooperated with the agency on the preparation and the execution of the course last autumn, and the Iceland Fisheries Research Institute took part in the project as well. These kinds of projects are part of increased cooperation between the Icelandic International Development Agency and UNU-FTP.

Those two institutions have cooperated to a considerable extent in the past. Every year students take part in the UN training programme in Iceland through the Development Agency.
