UN University has signed a cooperation agreement with the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC) to promote research, advanced wildland fire management training, policy and disaster reduction advisory services and dissemination of knowledge.

The Global Fire Monitoring Centre, an internationally recognized centre of excellence in the field of wildland fire science, global wildland fire monitoring, technology transfer and international policy support, will function as an associated institution of UNU.

The cooperation agreement was signed October 7 at the headquarters of the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in Bonn by UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel and the director of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Meinrat O. Andreae. Also present were GFMC director Johann G. Goldammer and UNU-EHS director Janos J. Bogardi.

The activities of UNU-EHS and GFMC will concentrate on a capacity building programme on wildland fire disaster management to support and complement the UNU mission, specifically directed at sustainable development.
