Libor Jansky honoured for UNU book on water history

Dr. Libor Jansky (pictured right), senior academic programme officer with the UN University Environment and Sustainable Development Programme, was awarded an International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) Citation Plaque during the 19th ICID Congress in Beijing.

The plaque was awarded for "excellence in performance, impressive achievements and outstanding contribution" in connection with the launch of the UNU publication A History of Water Issues: Lessons to Learn during congress. The award was presented by ICID presdent Keizrul bin Abdullah.

Dr. Jansky was a member of the ICID working group on history, former executive secretary of the Slovak national dommittee of ICID and served as an advisor for international cooperation at the Ministry of Agriculture, Slovakia.

Dr. Jansky said that one of the lessons to be learned from a historical study of water issues is that the focus of water management policies needs to change. "Water management normally focuses on rivers, lakes and water tables, but it is important to also explore other issues such as cross-border water flows, inter-basin transfers, and even 'virtual' water transfers through the export of water-intensive crops and manufactured goods."

Jansky and his colleagues stress human welfare and environmental sustainability demand that greater measures be used for understanding the broader perspective of the world water crisis.
