Major conference on African
research and education networking The aim of the workshop was to promote scientific cooperation with and within Africa, through the development of networking infrastructure. The event, hosted at CERN in Geneva, brought together representatives of African academic and research institutions, international coordinators, funding agencies and grass-roots implementers. The international telecommunications industry and regional telecom service providers at the workshop, which was co-sponsored by Cisco Systems.
The workshop explored the results of recent meetings on extending African university connectivity, organized by Internet2, the US university-led research network developer and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and provided a set of recommendations that will be presented to the second part of WSIS, which takes place in Tunis in November 2005. The workshop at CERN was organized with the close cooperation of various entities promoting international academic and research networks including: DANTE, the Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation, Internet2, the Internet Society, the French National Education and Research Network and the Trans-European research and Education Networking Association. |
