Peter Katjavivi elected chair of UNU Council
Former University of Namibia vice-chancellor, Professor Peter Katjavivi (pictured right), was elected chairman of the UN University (UNU) Council at its 52nd session held December 3-9 in Tokyo. Katjavivi, who is Namibia's ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, joined the UNU Council in 2002. He was a parliamentarian after Namibian independence in 1990 before becoming the founding vice-chancellor of the University of Namibia in 1992, where he played an important role in the transformation of the former academy to the new university. With UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel set to retire in September, Katjavivi's appointment comes at a critical period during which he will play a key role in overseeing the changeover. He said he was thrilled and delighted about his appointment and described it as an honour not only for himself, but also for Namibia and Africa. The UNU Council meets annually to formulate principles and policies which govern the activities and operations of the university and its international network of research and training centres and programmes. |
