Youth governance leadership course attracts 47

Forty-seven young men and women from 24 countries took part in a capacity-building course entitled Youth Leadership for Global Governance (YL4GG) presented by UNU International Leadership Institute (UNU-ILI). Organised in partnership with the King Abdullah the II Fund for Development (KAFD), the 12-day residential course was held at the Olive Branch Resort in Jerash to the north of Amman, Jordan, June 17-28.

YL4GG addresses a common problem with efforts to improve governance – the lack of contributions from young people. The course was developed to tap the energy and input of young people from different parts of the world and engage them in a structured dialogue resulting in action plans and concrete proposals.

The event attracted several international bodies as members of the course faculty including: UNDP Oslo Governance Centre; World Youth Peace Summit; IUCN The World Conservation Union-Jordan Regional Office; Habitat for Humanity; and Civitas.

Course sessions followed the learning approach that combined instructional content in the form of participatory workshops and experiential and practical components. Themes covered in the course included: governance, good governance and the MDGs; Multilateral Institutions in Global Governance; Political Advocacy and the role of Youth in Global Governance; Environmental Governance; Gender and Governance; Holistic Development; and, Globalization: Socio-cultural Implications and the Way Forward.

The course was funded by the Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND).
