Fifty complete UNU International Courses

Fifty graduate students and young professionals from all walks of life participated in the UNU International Courses from May 16 to June 24. The six-week post-graduate programme is held each year at UNU Centre in Tokyo.

Participants attended lectures by international experts from academia, the UN and non-governmental organizations. They also engaged in plenary discussions, gave their own presentations and prepared a range of written assignments. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel awarded a UNU Certificate of Completion.

Topics of the four courses offered this year were:

  • Armed Conflict: Prevention, Management and Resolution
  • Global Environment: Science and Policy
  • Human Rights: Concepts and Issues
  • International Cooperation and Development

As in previous years, the cultural and professional mix of participants and teaching staff guaranteed lively, sometimes controversial discussions. Each course also went on a thematic excursion. Destinations this year included a prison (to explore some human rights aspects of criminal justice), an armed forces base (to learn about training for peace-keeping missions) and a waste management site (to illustrate issues of environmental management and urban development).

The next session of the UNU International Courses will be held May 15 to June 23 next year. Details of the 2006 programme along with application forms and information on scholarship opportunities will be available on the UNU website from October.
