Seeking a better connection for African universities UN University is joining forces with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in a feasibility study to determine how African universities can get better access to the Internet. The African University Network (AFUNET) project will present its findings at a parallel event at the World Summit for the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis in November 2005. The project partners will work with African universities to find measures to provide network connectivity and extend affordable and easy IT access and services, starting with a few countries and gradually extending to cover the whole continent. The first AFUNET workshop took place in Arendal, Norway June 23-24 with a followup during WSIS Prepcom 3 in Geneva in September. AFUNET, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, is a practical response to the WSIS Plan of Action and is designed to help African universities to take advantage of the opportunities associated with the emergence of the global information society. |
