University of Ghana honours UNU Rector

UNU Rector Hans van Ginkel was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree during a March 12 ceremony at the 55th Congregation of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The accompanying citation noted Prof. van Ginkel’s achievements in the field of education, particularly in the application of geographical knowledge in society, urban and regional planning, public housing and housing markets, and public administration. The citation also noted Professor van Ginkel’s singular commitment and contributions to higher education and sustainable development particularly at the international level.

Prof. van Ginkel was in Ghana to deliver the 26th Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures at the University of Ghana.  In a series of three lectures entitled Re-thinking the University for the 21st Century; Our Common Future: Roles of Universities; and The Wealth of Diversity: the Role of Universities in Dialogue and Development, Prof. van Ginkel addressed the many changes universities worldwide are undergoing in the era of globalization. 

The lectures were attended by the Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, members of the Council of State in Ghana, the Minister of Education and Sports, the Minister of State for Tertiary Education, Parliamentarians, academics and students.
