New database will be one-stop source for UN research

UN University has launched a new Internet portal designed to provide better access to research materials from throughout the United Nations system.

The Research in the United Nations (RUN) Database, created and managed by UNU International Institute for Software Technologies (UNU-IIST), uses meta-data submitted by members, either through a URL to the actual publication or by uploading entire publication files to the IIST mainframe.

RUN currently contains research reports from four UNU centres – UNU-IIST, UNU Institute for Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), UNU Institute for New Technologies (UNU-INTECH) and UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) – but will gradually grow to incorporate the work of many other UN research organizations and agencies.

The RUN portal has been created as a single repository for research material from different UN organisations, allowing the public to have a global view of the research activities within the UN. It is also an archive for long-term information storage. It will allow users to retrieve UN documents on a subject without having to search several UN websites.

Any organisation or institution belonging to the United Nations can join RUN. Technical/Research Reports that present new research/technical/development work as well as surveys of previous work can be included in the repository.
