Experts discuss rule of law and transitional justice

UN University's Peace and Governance Programme, the UNU Office at the UN and the UN Office of Legal Affairs organized a panel discussion on The Rule of Law and Transitional Justice: The Way Forward, at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the UN January 27.

Panel members at the discussion included (from left):
Ralph Zacklin (Assistant UN Secretary-General for
Legal Affairs, Ramesh Thakur, senior vice rector of UNU,
and David Hutchinson, of the UN Office of Legal Affairs.

The event, a follow-up to the Secretary General’s report on /The Rule of Law and Transitional Justice in Conflict and Post-Conflict Societies/ released last August, aimed to use the problems pinpointed in this report to identify possible solutions.

In a full-day roundtable, the expert panelists and participants worked through a broad agenda addressing the legal, political and social dimensions of the rule of law and transitional justice in conflict and post-conflict societies.

The event was chaired and moderated by UNU senior vide rector Ramesh Thakur. Panelists and spectators were drawn from a range of institutions including UN agencies, academic and aresearch institutions, foundations and NGOs.

Ambassadors, and political as well as legal advisors from Permanent Missions of Member-states to the UN, such as Cambodia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, China and Finland, also attended.
